Options Backtest: Test Your Strategy on History Before Entering

Before risking money, a strategy is worth testing on history — that is a backtest. The idea is simple: you pick a date in the past, build an options position, and "replay" it over the real quotes until expiry. That way you see in advance how the strategy would actually have behaved: how many trades were profitable, what the drawdown was, what the bottom line is. The video shows the options simulator on CryptoMetrics Pro, where this takes a couple of clicks.

Three steps: date → build → run

The whole backtest is three steps. Date: pick a day in the past from which you want to test the strategy. Build: assemble a position from options (for example, sell a call and buy a put) — the payoff diagram appears immediately: breakeven points, maximum profit and maximum loss. Run: press Run, and the system replays the strategy over real history and returns the result.

The screenshot shows an example: date 11 March 2023, position Sell Call 30,000 / Buy Put 26,000, and results for the period — Total Return +24.37%, Win Rate 64.8%, Profit Factor 1.63, Max Drawdown −8.92%, 32 trades. All of this is visible before you risked any real money.

Three backtest steps: pick a date → build a position (payoff diagram) → run and get the result (Total Return, Win Rate, Profit Factor, Max Drawdown).

What it looks like in the simulator

In the real tool (GEX Terminal → Position Builder on CryptoMetrics Pro) you build the position by legs: direction (Buy/Sell), type (Call/Put), strike, expiry, quantity. It instantly computes credit/debit, max profit, max loss, breakeven and the greeks (Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega, Rho). You choose the entry date, press Backtest → Run — and the position is replayed over the real historical quotes until expiry.

Which strategy works and when

A backtest helps you understand not just "how much you would have made" but which strategy fits the market. Different regimes call for different strategies:

  • Impulse (strong directional move). A Bull Call Spread fits — profit on a confident rise with limited risk.
  • Range (market stuck in a band). An Iron Condor fits — it earns while price stays between levels.
  • Volatility (sharp unpredictable moves). A Long Straddle fits — profit on a strong move in either direction.
Which strategy works: impulse → Bull Call Spread, range → Iron Condor, volatility → Long Straddle.

Which numbers a beginner should watch

After running a backtest, look at a few key metrics:

  • Win Rate. The share of profitable trades. It alone does not guarantee profit but shows consistency.
  • Profit Factor. The ratio of profit to losses. Above 1 means the strategy is net positive; the higher, the better.
  • Max Drawdown. The largest drop in the account — how "painful" it gets along the way.
  • Total Return and the number of trades. The final return and the sample it came from (few trades — less trust).

Pre-entry backtest checklist

  • I picked a date in the past and built a position in the Position Builder.
  • I checked the payoff diagram: breakeven, max profit and max loss.
  • I ran the Backtest over real history.
  • I assessed Win Rate, Profit Factor and Max Drawdown, not just the return.
  • I made sure the strategy fits the current market regime.

In short

An options backtest is testing a strategy on history before entering: you pick a date, build a position, and replay it over real quotes until expiry. Look not only at the return but also at Win Rate, Profit Factor and maximum drawdown, and match the strategy to the market regime: impulse — Bull Call Spread, range — Iron Condor, volatility — Long Straddle. You can test your own strategy in the options simulator (Position Builder) on CryptoMetrics Pro.
